The Basque Government has initiated the file to declare the bertsolarismo as Intangible Cultural Asset of Special Protection, according to the Official Gazette of the Basque Country (BOPV) published this Monday.
The Minister of Culture and Linguistic Policy, Bingen Zupiria, already announced this declaration last June in a plenary session of the Basque Parliament and then defended that bertsolaritza is the “clearest example” of intangible heritage for being a living expression that the community has known how to transmit and preserve.
The purpose of this statement is boost protection and transmission of bertsolarismo. The first written mention appears in the Bizkaia Charters of 1452 but it is not until the end of the 18th century that specific references are found. Bertsolaritza requires spontaneity, rhetorical resources and knowledge of reality and although today it is in good condition, it is an element in permanent danger of extinction because, being based on improvisation, each session is unique and unrepeatable, the counselor explained at the time.
These characteristics correspond to the definition of intangible cultural heritage contained in the Basque Cultural Heritage Law of 2019, which is the legal framework that allows bertsolaritza to be declared as an Intangible Cultural Asset of Special Protection, a process that has already begun as published today the BOPV.
