Irina Rodnina said that there is more politics in sports than in other areas
Three-time Olympic champion in figure skating and State Duma deputy Irina Rodnina spoke about the influence of politics on sports. Her words are quoted by TASS.
Rodnina said that nowadays there is more politics in sports than in other areas. “Now our athletes practically do not participate in international competitions anywhere. But our suspension is based solely on political reasons, since our athletes did not violate any rules,” she emphasized.
On March 28, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended that Belarusians and Russians who did not support the special operation in Ukraine be allowed to compete in neutral status. At the same time, athletes from Russia and Belarus associated with the armed forces or security agencies of their countries are recommended to be excluded from participation in competitions.
At the end of February 2022, most sports organizations suspended Russians and Belarusians from tournaments on the recommendation of the IOC.
