Weightlifter Angie Palacios Dajomes will carry the flag of Ecuador during the opening ceremony parade of the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, this Friday, October 20 (from 18:00 Ecuador) at the National Stadium. The 20-year-old tricolor native of Shell had a notable performance at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Palacios placed sixth in the 64-kilogram category, in his debut at the Olympic Games, a place that allowed him to win the first Olympic diploma for the national delegation.

The Ecuadorian Olympic Committee (COE) reported that “a weightlifter will wave the colors of the national flag at the opening ceremony of the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, where about 70 Ecuadorian athletes will parade. The male flag bearer, Marchant Daniel Pintado, who will arrive in Chile in the next few days, will not be able to be with her either. He will be replaced by Olympic road cycling champion Richard Carapaz.”
With 71 kilograms
Palacios will make his weightlifting debut this Sunday in the 71-kilogram category, aiming to improve on his placing at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, where he won a bronze medal.
Commenting on her standard bearer status, Palacios said that “it’s going to be very exciting.” In Tokyo 2020, her sister Neisi Dajomes, who was declared champion, had the same designation.

Angie Palacios didn’t just shine in the last JJ. OO., in his sports career highlights the world record in the jerk, in the category up to 71 kg achieved at the Grand Prix of Havana, as well as the world runner-up. Today it is in the second place ranking Olympian of his division.

Meanwhile, Carapaz, from Carpaz, who is mentioned by most of the Chilean media as one of the biggest attractions of Santiago 2023, said of his status as the bearer of the tricolor: “Today I am appointed to carry the flag of our country, which has always been a source of pride for us. I am very happy”.

At the age of 30, the Olympic champion in road cycling (Tokyo 2020) and Giro d’Italia 2019 will participate in the Pan American Games for the first time. His debut in Santiago was preceded by some injuries, such as the one that forced him to withdraw from the Tour de France. However, he reappeared in September at the Giro de la Toscana (Italy), finishing second, then at the Tour of Luxembourg, where he continued to recover, culminating in Italy’s Tre Valli Varesine, where he finished second. Gold in Santiago would guarantee a place in Paris 2024. Compete on October 22nd and 29th (on road and in time trial mode).
Carapaz is one of the main medal options for Ecuador in Santiago 2023, along with other athletes such as weightlifters Tamara Salazar (bronze at Tokyo 2020) and Angie Palacios and walkers Glenda Morejón and Daniel Pintado. (D)
