Povetkin spoke about his attitude to performing without the flag and anthem

Povetkin said that he would not change his citizenship to compete in tournaments

Former Russian heavyweight boxer Alexander Povetkin spoke about how he views the performances of his compatriots in a neutral status. The athlete spoke out on the Meta MMA YouTube channel.

The Russian noted that he understands those who agree to this. “If they perform without a flag and an anthem, everyone still knows who they are. I think let them perform. Why not? Everyone knows who they are. And everyone knows that they are for Russia,” Povetkin noted.

The ex-athlete added that he cannot condemn Russian athletes who change their citizenship in order to perform at international tournaments. “I wouldn’t change my citizenship, that’s for sure. And it’s not in my rules to discuss someone,” Povetkin said.

On June 13, 2021, it became known that Povetkin had completed his performances in professional boxing. The heavyweight explained this decision due to health problems.

Povetkin is a 2004 Olympic champion and former World Boxing Association (WBA) world champion. In the professional ring, he won 36 victories, suffered three defeats and ended one match in a draw.
