Tim Tszyu defeated Brian Mendoza to defend his WBO championship belt for the first time
Australian boxer Tim Tszyu defended his World Boxing Organization (WBO) world title. This was reported by a Lenta.ru correspondent.
Tszyu defeated American Brian Mendoza by unanimous decision. The fight took place in Broadbeach, Australia and lasted all 12 rounds. Thus, Tszyu defended his championship belt for the first time, and also won the title of interim champion according to the World Boxing Council (WBC), which was held by Mendoza.
Tim Tszyu, the eldest son of former absolute world champion Kostya Tszyu, won the WBO title without a fight on October 1. This happened after the former holder of the belt, American Jermell Charlo, began a fight with Mexican Saul Alvarez in Las Vegas, in which he lost.
Tszyu was scheduled to fight Charlo on January 28. However, the fight was postponed indefinitely due to the American’s injury. After Charlo refused to fight Tszyu, it became known that he was stripped of his belt.
28-year-old Tim Tszyu has 24 victories in a row, 17 of which were won by knockout. In his professional career, he did not suffer a single defeat. Mendoza has 22 wins and three losses.
