Mexico defends leadership at Concacaf against El Salvador

The sixth round of the final octagonal of the Concacaf Qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup, which will take place in Qatar, takes place this Wednesday and has emotions in store. Mexico defends leadership in the competition on a visit to El Salvador. The duel is scheduled for the Cuscatlán Stadium, in San Salvador.

The Mexicans appear in the lead with 11 points conquered, two more than the United States and Panama, which share the second place. Despite playing away from home, Mexico are favorites against an irregular team. El Salvador appears with just five points, in sixth place.

“We’re coming off a big win (3-0 over Honduras) where we won because we put pressure on the whole game. I hope we behave like that against El Salvador,” said Mexico coach Gerardo Martino.

At New Columbus Stadium in Ohio, the United States host Costa Rica in a head-to-head confrontation. The Yankees, who were left out of the last World Cup, will face the Costa Ricans who need to score, as they are six points out even in the repechage area.

Panama, closing the classification zone, has a direct confrontation with Canada in Toronto. The Canadians now appear in the repechage area, but will change positions with the Panamanians if the field factor prevails.

In the other game of the round there is a clash of desperate people. Honduras, second from bottom with three points, receives the Jamaica lantern, who has two points. The two are the only teams that haven’t won at this stage of the tournament.

According to the regulation of the final octagonal of the Concacaf Qualifications, the eight teams face each other in the system of running points, in turn and return. In the end, the top three are automatically classified for the World Cup in Qatar. The fourth place will still have an extra chance in the international repechage.

Below are all the matches scheduled for this Wednesday for the competition, respecting Brasília time:

8pm – United States x Costa Rica
20h30 – Canada x Panama
9pm – Honduras x Jamaica
