Félix Sánchez Bas, the head coach of the Ecuadorian national team, surprised last Saturday with the list of players for the 2026 South American qualifiers against Bolivia and Colombia and by calling up winger John Yeboah Zamora.

This 23-year-old soccer player was born in Hamburg, Germany, his father is from Ghana, and his mother is from Ecuador. He plays for Raków Częstochowa, the current champion of the Polish league.

“This is our midfielder’s first call-up to the national team in his career. John has three passports: German, Ghanaian and Ecuadorian. Our player’s mother comes from Ecuador,” his club’s website announced.

On September 6, the winger received his tricolor biometric passport at the Ecuadorian consulate in Hamburg, Germany.

“The Consulate of Ecuador welcomes a new Ecuadorian and a professional football player who went to the consulate to register his birth and request the issuance of his biometric passport. Welcome John Yeboah Zamora!, the organization announced in a message on its social networks.

The footballer will arrive in Quito in the next few hours and will join the team coached by Spaniard Félix Sánchez Bas. (D)
