Members of the International Skating Union will propose returning Belarusians to tournaments
The International Skating Union (ISU) will consider the return of Belarusian athletes to tournaments. RIA Novosti reports this with reference to a source familiar with the situation.
As the source learned, several ISU members at the organization’s Council will propose to once again allow athletes from Belarus to participate in tournaments. It is noted that there are reasons for this, including the absence of the Belarusian military in Ukraine. At the same time, there is no talk of supporting the return of Russians to competitions.
Earlier, two-time world figure skating champion Japanese Kaori Sakamoto said that she was looking forward to the return of Russian athletes. “It will definitely give me motivation to work even harder,” she added.
On March 1, 2022, the ISU banned Russians and Belarusians from participating in competitions under its auspices. Because of the sanctions, figure skaters, speed skaters and short track speed skaters were unable to take part in the World and European Championships and other international tournaments.
