Frenchman Adam Xiao Him Fa won the Shanghai Trophy with an illegal somersault
French figure skater Adam Xiao Him Fa won the 2023 Shanghai Trophy despite performing a prohibited element in his free skate. RIA Novosti reports this.
The athlete performed a backflip, which, in accordance with the rules of the International Skating Union (ISU), cannot be performed in competitive programs. The referees fined the skater two points, but his score (282.80) was enough to win. In second place was Junhwan Cha, representing South Korea (254.86), and in third place was Chinese Boyang Jin (238.33).
Xiao Him Fa is the 2023 European champion. The athlete also has gold from the French Grand Prix stage of the 2022/2023 season. He is currently ranked fourth in the ISU rankings.
On March 1, 2022, the ISU banned Russians from participating in competitions under its auspices. The sanctions will remain in effect until further notice.
