NHL player Provorov called the reaction to refusal to participate in the LGBT event ambiguous
Russian Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Ivan Provorov, who played for the Philadelphia Flyers until 2023, spoke in an interview with the Slippery Ice YouTube channel about the public reaction to the refusal to participate in LGBT events in the National Hockey League (NHL).
Provorov called the reaction in the United States mixed. According to him, in the first 24 hours there was mostly negativity directed at him, including on social networks and the media, but his relatives supported him. “In Russia everyone supported me, there were also friends and acquaintances who supported me. And for the next two or three weeks there was positivity, because politics there is still divided – Republicans think one way, and Democrats think differently,” he said.
The hockey player added that after a while people began to buy his jersey. “People, on the contrary, liked this act – he insisted on his own, on faith, religion. Just for what I think is right. These were the people who bought the T-shirts,” the athlete explained.
On January 18, Provorov, being a Philadelphia player, did not go to practice before the match with the Anaheim Ducks (5:2) due to the use of a uniform with LGBT symbols. After this, other hockey players and clubs began to refuse to participate in the promotions, including the Minnesota Wild and the New York Rangers.
