Pozdnyakov called the performance of Russians in the refugee team at the Olympic Games 2024 unacceptable
The head of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), Stanislav Pozdnyakov, appreciated Ukraine’s idea of allowing Russians to the 2024 Olympic Games in the refugee team. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
Pozdnyakov called the inclusion of Russians in the refugee team for the Games in Paris unacceptable. “There is an old wisdom: don’t dig a hole for someone else, you will fall into it yourself. Therefore, I would like to warn those who make such statements so that they themselves do not end up in this team,” he said.
The ROC president also noted that he potentially does not see a single Russian Olympian at the Games in Paris. He explained that Russia had not received an invitation to participate in the tournament.
Earlier, Ukrainian judoka Georgiy Zantaraya told International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach that his country does not understand the recommendation that Russians compete in a neutral status. He invited athletes from Russia to join the refugee team.
On March 28, the IOC recommended that Belarusians and Russians who do not support the special operation in Ukraine be allowed to compete in neutral status. However, athletes associated with the armed forces or security forces of their countries are recommended not to be allowed to participate in tournaments. The issue of the participation of Russian athletes in the 2024 Olympics has not yet been resolved.
