St. Petersburg sports schools announced a ban on traveling abroad without approval
Athletes from St. Petersburg have been restricted from traveling abroad. RIA Novosti learned about this from several sources familiar with the situation.
Sources close to the Committee for Physical Culture and Sports of St. Petersburg confirmed that, according to the order, employees and students of the city’s budget sports schools are prohibited from traveling to training camps and competitions outside of Russia. However, if agreed upon by the committee, travel abroad may be permitted.
Several budget sports schools added that previously there was a list of friendly countries to which travel was allowed. “Until recently, Turkey was included in it, but then the committee said: ‘Forget about it,’” shared the head of one of the schools.
In March, the International Olympic Committee recommended that Belarusians and Russians who do not support the special operation in Ukraine be allowed to compete in neutral status. However, athletes associated with the armed forces or security agencies of the two countries are recommended not to be allowed to participate in tournaments.
