Ukrainian Tsurenko demands clarification of the meaning of neutral status for Russians
Ukrainian tennis player Lesya Tsurenko demanded that the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) clarify the meaning of neutral status. Her words are quoted by Big Tennis of Ukraine.
“As for the use of flags, popularization of players, pages on social networks, it would be good if they clarified the features of this status in which the so-called neutral athletes are,” Tsurenko said. She emphasized that she has been in a state of constant confrontation with the WTA on this issue for a year and a half.
The WTA and the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) did not suspend Russians from competitions. Athletes continue to compete at tournaments in a neutral status.
In March, the IOC recommended allowing Belarusians and Russians who did not support the special military operation in Ukraine to compete in neutral status. At the same time, athletes associated with the armed forces or security agencies of their countries are recommended to be excluded from participation in tournaments.
