He Athletic Club faces the Basque derby this Saturday at the Reale Arena against Real Sociedad with the intention of cutting his worst streak of the century in the San Sebastian stadium, where hasn’t won since 2017 and has only been able to achieve two draws in its last six appearances.
Bilbao’s last victory in this duel dates back to March 12, 2017 when, as now with Ernesto Valverde on the bench, Athletic won 0-2 with goals from Raúl García from a penalty and from Iñaki Williams.
Since that date, the derbies played in the capital of Gipuzkoa have resulted in four local wins and two draws, both 1-1.
La Real, for its part, beat its eternal rival 3-1 in the 2017-2018 and 2022-2023 campaigns and 2-1 in the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 campaigns.
If Athletic did not win on Saturday, they would reach seven derbies without winning at home and would equal the worst series in the San Sebastian stadium inaugurated in 1993.
Since their first visit to Anoeta on May 8, 1994, the red and white team had four draws and three defeats until January 14, 2001 when they celebrated their first victory thanks to a double from Joseba Etxeberria (0-2).
