Olympic speed skating champion and State Duma deputy Svetlana Zhurova named the main threat to the Olympic movement. Her words are quoted by “Moscow Says”.
“The biggest threat, in my understanding, is not political boycotts, but what is happening to transgender people,” Zhurova said. According to the deputy, when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) gives a person the right to choose a gender for a performance, it calls into question the conduct of women’s competitions.
Zhurova noted that with such a position of the IOC, everyone is in an uncomfortable and unequal position. “For transgender people to appear in a particular team, many countries need to change their national sports legislation. But we understand that not all countries are ready for this, ”she explained.
Earlier, the deputy Vitaly Milonov spoke about transgender people in sports. He called the gender-reassigned athletes crazy mutants and suggested that special competitions be instituted for them.
On November 17, the IOC presented guidelines for the admission of transgender athletes to women’s competitions. They state, inter alia, that athletes must be eligible regardless of gender or gender identity. Detailed criteria for admission must be developed by the national federations themselves.
