Svetlana Zhurova said she was surprised by Semirunny’s transfer to the Polish national team

First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs and Olympic speed skating champion Svetlana Zhurova spoke about the transfer of Russian champion Vladimir Semirunny to the Polish national team. Her words are quoted by Match TV.

“No one has left the federation at all. I’m surprised that someone wants to go somewhere in this form. Perhaps he left because of the Polish coach, who worked in Russia for a long time,” Zhurova said.

On September 18, it became known that Semirunniy notified the Russian Skating Union of his desire to change his sports citizenship and represent another country. He thanked the Russian coaches for the years of preparation. “Now is the time to take the most important step in your development as an athlete, and international practice is necessary,” he explained.

Semirunny is the 2022 Russian speed skating champion at a distance of 10,000 meters. The athlete also has a bronze medal at the Junior World Championships; he holds the country’s record among juniors at a distance of 3000 meters.

On March 1, 2022, the International Skating Union banned Russians from participating in competitions under its auspices. The sanctions will remain in effect until further notice.
