American transgender swimmer Leah Thomas has broken several national records in a competition in Akron. Reported by the Daily Mail.
According to the source, the 22-year-old athlete was 38 seconds ahead of her closest pursuer in the 1,500-meter swim, and 14 seconds ahead of her in the 500-meter swim. Some swimmers lagged behind her in a circle. It is noted that the swimmer’s victories displeased rivals due to the fact that Thomas was a man a year ago and competes with them on an equal footing.
That being said, Thomas’ results meet the criteria of the National Student Sports Association (NCAA). She is listed for the US Championships in March 2022.
Thomas, as a man, performed for the last time in November 2019. The athlete underwent a one-year testosterone reduction course to ensure an equal position for all tournament participants.
On November 17, the International Olympic Committee presented recommendations on the admission of transgender athletes to competitions among women. They state that athletes must be admitted regardless of gender or gender identity, and detailed eligibility criteria must be developed by the national federations themselves.
