The player “has a fractured zygomatic arch, as indicated by an MRI that he underwent on his return from Porto, and will have to undergo surgery,” reported Atlético this Wednesday.
The rojiblanco club did not provide further information on the date of intervention or the recovery time of the player, who will not be able to compete in the derby of the spanish championship against Real Madrid, not Sunday.
Vrsaljko took a blow to the face that injured him in Tuesday’s victory over Porto, in which Atlético qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League.
Incumbent in this clash, Vrsaljko “made a great game […] The whole second time he played with a bruised face. I hope it’s nothing. That’s good when you tell the group that everyone is important and that for those who play less, it’s time to show up,” coach Diego Simeone said after the game.
The Croatian defender has played only nine games so far this season and the match against Porto was the first he completed as a starter.
