Romashina said that she would not call athletes who changed their citizenship traitors
Seven-time Olympic champion in synchronized swimming Svetlana Romashina spoke about Russian athletes changing their citizenship. Her words were reported by Vedomosti.
“I will under no circumstances call athletes who change their citizenship traitors. I understand what they sacrificed since childhood, how they worked for the dream of major tournaments,” Romashina said. At the same time, she emphasized that she herself would not be able to compete for another country, since this is unacceptable for her.
Earlier, Romashina said that she noticed a drop in the morale of the athletes. “But everyone is staying strong, training and believing in the best,” she added.
On March 28, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended that Belarusians and Russians who did not support the special operation in Ukraine be allowed to compete in neutral status. At the same time, athletes associated with the armed forces or security agencies of their countries are recommended to be excluded from participation in competitions.
At the end of February 2022, many sports organizations banned Russians from participating in tournaments on the recommendation of the IOC.
