Putin: athletes must independently decide on participation in the Olympics
Russian athletes must independently decide whether to participate in the Olympics in 2024. This was stated by Russian President Vladimir Putin during the plenary meeting of the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF), RIA Novosti reports.
“Of course, we must first of all be guided by the interests of the athletes in this situation,” he said, adding that athletes who have been preparing for competitions for decades must make certain decisions themselves.
At the end of July, Russian Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin spoke about the country’s representatives’ chances of participating in the 2024 Summer Olympics. According to the functionary, all is not lost on this issue.
On July 26, the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, made a new statement about the participation of Russians in the 2024 Games. He noted that the decision on the admission of athletes will depend on the development of the situation.
