Norwegian champion skier talks about hidden FIS doping test

Eight-time Olympic champion in cross-country skiing Marit Bjorgen, in the biographical book “The Heart of a Winner”, told how she passed a positive doping test at the 2017 World Championships in Lahti. The excerpt is quoted by VG.

The Norwegian athlete said that she received a message from the International Ski Federation (FIS) after the marathon at the World Cup. It said that the anti-doping laboratory in Lahti had found abnormalities in her sample. The reason for the failure of the test was the intake of Bjoergen, a drug to shift the menstrual cycle.

The skier sent a letter of explanation to the FIS stating that the drug was not eliminated from the body due to dehydration before the starts. The explanation suited the organization, because of which the investigation was completed, and the information about the doping in the Norwegian’s blood was hidden. “The doping case was not opened. Everything remained between me, FIS and my coaches, ”she summed up.

At the World Championships in Lahti, Bjorgen won four gold medals. In April 2018, she announced her retirement. The Norwegian is the winner of the most awards in the history of the Winter Olympics of any athlete. She won 15 medals, eight of which are gold, four silver and three bronze.
