IIHF head Tardif announced new sanctions due to Ivan Fedotov’s play for CSKA
The President of the International Hockey Federation (IIHF) Luc Tardif announced new sanctions due to the situation with the Russian Ivan Fedotov from CSKA. His words are quoted by “Championship”.
“The IIHF Council will go even further for the second and third violation of IIHF rules. The IIHF is committed to fighting for respect for our rules and protecting the universal principle of respect for contract and transfer rules,” he said, adding that a press release would be published on the organization’s website in the coming days.
On August 14, the IIHF suspended Fedotov for four months, but the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) still allowed him to play. CSKA was banned from conducting international transfers for a year. The IIHF refused to register a contract with Fedotov for the new KHL season due to the player’s existing agreement with the National Hockey League (NHL) Philadelphia Flyers.
On July 1, Fedotov signed a contract with CSKA. The NHL expressed dissatisfaction with the decision, as it violates the goalkeeper’s current agreement with Philadelphia, concluded in May 2022. At the same time, the Russian tried to fly to the United States, but he was detained in St. Petersburg on suspicion of evading military service. After this, the player served in the Russian Navy for a year.
