Infantino says Rubiales kissing Hermoso at Worlds shouldn’t have happened
FIFA President Gianni Infantino on Instagram (social network banned in Russia; owned by Meta, a recognized extremist organization and banned in Russia) spoke about the scandal that occurred due to the kiss of the head of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales, the football player of the national team Jenny Hermoso at the 2023 World Cup.
“Unfortunately, the well-deserved celebration of the champions was spoiled by what happened after the final whistle. And what continued to happen in the following days. This should never have happened,” said Infantino, noting that the disciplinary proceedings will continue in a legal manner.
On August 24, FIFA opened a disciplinary case against Rubiales due to an incident at the tournament. Later, the former Spanish football player Ana Romero urged him to leave the federation.
At the awards ceremony, Rubiales put on Spain captain Hermoso a medal and kissed the player on the lips. This drew criticism from the media and Spanish politicians. After the scandal, Rubiales apologized and stated that he did it without malicious intent.
