Rubiales says he’s not going to resign over footballer’s kiss
The head of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales, responded to a question about his dismissal due to the incident with the kiss of an athlete at the 2023 Women’s World Cup. Marca reports.
“I made a mistake, and now is not the right time for such a gesture. But is it really so serious that I have to leave? I’m not going to resign,” Rubiales said. He added that he would fight for his post until the end.
Earlier on August 24, the International Football Federation (FIFA) opened a disciplinary case against Rubiales due to an incident at the tournament. Later, the former Spanish football player Ana Romero urged him to leave the federation.
At the awards ceremony, Rubiales put a medal on Spanish captain Heniver Hermoso and kissed the player on the lips. This drew criticism from the media and Spanish politicians. After the scandal, Rubiales apologized and stated that he did it without malicious intent.
