Magnus Carlsen wins the World Chess Cup for the first time in his career
The 16th world champion Norwegian Magnus Carlsen became the owner of the World Chess Cup – 2023. This is reported by the correspondent of Lenta.ru.
In the final match of the tournament, which was held in Baku, the Norwegian grandmaster beat India’s Rameshbaba Pragnanandha. The meeting ended with a score of 1.5:0.5 in favor of Carlsen. In both classical chess games in the finals, the athletes could not determine the winner.
Carlsen won the World Cup for the first time in his career. Of the Russian grandmasters, Ian Nepomniachtchi went farthest in the tournament bracket, losing in the 1/8 finals to Indian Vidit Gujrati with a total score of 2:4.
The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has allowed Russian and Belarusian chess players to compete in international competitions under a neutral flag until January 1, 2024. After this period, athletes will be returned the right to compete under the flag of their country, unless another decision is made before that.
