Davis Cup published its new format for the 2022 edition | Other Sports | sports

The tournament will be with sixteen teams instead of the eighteen that have participated in 2021 and will have an initial round with four groups.

The president of the International Tennis Federation Dave (ITF), Dave Haggerty, and the general director of Kosmos, Enric Rojas, unveiled the new competition system: announced that there will be several venues for the group stage and a venue for the semi-finals and final, but they did not make public the names of any of the countries that will host the tournament next year.

The Davis Cup, which will complete its third edition with the new format in the coming year, re-alter its formula. It will be with sixteen teams instead of the eighteen who participated in 2021 and they will have an initial round with four groups of as many teams, instead of six out of three.

There will be multiple venues for this initial round. As has happened this year, where Turin, Innsbruck and Madrid, -which later was also the host of the final stage-, hosted the group stage, in the 2022 edition there will be four cities that will organize the first round of the event. The first of each quartet will then move to a different stage to play the semifinals and the final.

Neither the name of the sub-venues for the group stage nor the stage for the 2021 final stage were made public this Sunday. Enric Rojas pointed out that there are several options and interested cities but that the decision will be made public in the coming weeks after evaluating the candidates, although he stressed that they will be places at the same altitude.

In recent days, Abu Dhabi’s choice to host the 2022 finals was taken for granted, but the CEO of Kosmos did not confirm it. Enric Roja acknowledged that she is one of the candidates, with whom negotiations have been held for a long time, although the agreement has not been signed. In any case, it will be decided in the coming weeks, in the month of January.

The teams that are already confirmed for the next edition are Russia and Croatia, finalists of the current edition, and Serbia and Great Britain, guests of the tournament. The other twelve will come out of the qualifiers that have been drawn this Sunday, in which Ecuador has been paired with France, and that will be played on March 4 and 5.
