Messi, Haaland and De Bruyne nominated for UEFA Player of the Year Award
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has announced on its website the nominees for the award for the best player of the year.
The top three nominees were Lionel Messi, who moved in July from the French Paris Saint-Germain to the American Inter Miami. Also on the list are two Manchester City players, Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne.
36-year-old Messi in 2022 became the world champion for the first time in his career and was recognized as the best player of the tournament in Qatar. Together with PSG, he won the championship and the French Super Cup. 23-year-old Haaland and 32-year-old De Bruyne completed the treble for Manchester City: they won the Champions League, the championship and the FA Cup.
The winner will be announced on 31 August at the 2023/2024 Champions League group stage draw ceremony. In 2022, the award was given to French striker Karim Benzema, who moved from Real Madrid to Saudi Al-Ittihad in the summer of 2023.
