Head of the NOC of Ukraine Gutzeit: Russia can make a “goodwill gesture” by skipping the Olympics
Minister of Youth and Sports of Ukraine and President of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of the country Vadym Gutzeit spoke again about Russia’s participation in the 2024 Olympic Games. His words are reported by France24.
“I do not rule out that the Russians will make a “goodwill gesture” and say they will miss the Olympics,” he said, adding that the decision on admission remains with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and international sports federations.
On August 14, Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal announced the formation of an international coalition of 35 countries ready to boycott the Games in Paris if athletes from Russia and Belarus participate in them. At the same time, Gutzeit stressed earlier that the Ukrainian side would agree to compete at the Olympics, subject to the admission of Russian and Belarusian athletes in a neutral status.
The Olympic Games are to be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11, 2024. The question of the participation of Russian athletes in competitions has not yet been resolved.
