Mamiashvili called insane the refusal of Ukrainian wrestlers to shake hands with the Russians
President of the Russian Wrestling Federation (FSBR) and Olympic champion Mikhail Mamiashvili appreciated the fact that Ukrainian athletes refused to shake hands with Russians and Belarusians at the junior world championship. His words are quoted by Match TV.
Mamiashvili called this decision insane and stressed that sport should remain out of politics. “Nobody will complain here, we must be strong and win,” said the head of the federation.
The decision of the Ukrainian wrestlers became known on August 15. The Junior World Wrestling Championship takes place in Jordanian Amman until August 20.
On April 4, the executive committee of the United World Wrestling decided to allow Russian athletes to participate in international tournaments. In a statement, the Federation of Greco-Roman, Freestyle and Women’s Wrestling said that the Russians would compete in a neutral status. It is noted that athletes will be allowed to compete subject to the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee.
