Roberto Mancini quits his job as Italy coach

In office since May 2018 and champion of eurocup In 2021, coach Roberto Mancini resigned as head of the Italian national team, announced the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) this Sunday.

“The FIGC became aware of and received Roberto Mancini’s resignation on Saturday night,” said the statement from the federation, which did not detail the reasons for the coach’s departure.

“Due to the national team’s important commitments, with the Euro 2024 qualifiers against North Macedonia and Ukraine on September 10th and 12th, the FIGC will announce the name of the new coach in the next few days,” the federation added in note.

Since the announcement of his resignation, the Italian press has mentioned as a possible successor the name of Luciano Spaletti, who led Napoli to the title of A league last season before leaving the club.

Roberto Mancini’s departure is a big surprise. Last week, the FIGC had announced that, in addition to the senior team, the coach would oversee the under-20 and under-21 teams.

Mancini succeeded in May 2018 Luigi di Bagio, appointed on an interim basis after Italy failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup under Gian Piero Ventura.

Former ‘Azzurra’ player, Mancini, 58, led the Italian national team to the Euro 2021 title, but failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.
