A Women’s World Cup it is in its last days. This Saturday, England beat Colombia, on the comeback, by 2-1, and was closer to winning the title. Santos opened the scoring for the Colombians, but Hemps and Russo were there to turn for England and put the European team in the semifinals.
The British dominated the action of the match, but Colombia also had its moments of brilliance. Leicy Santos scored a great goal and Linda Caicedo stood out again. However, England got their goals and then just held on to the result.
Now, England will face the hosts. Australia beat France on penalties, earlier this Saturday, by 7-6, and arrive confident that they will get a place in the big decision with the support of their fans.
The match between England and Colombia
The match started with English dominance. England had more possession of the ball, but exchanged many passes and, due to the nervousness involved in a World Cup quarter-final duel, could not create much. When the nerves calmed down, the English managed to finish a few times, but did not score.
Colombia, on the other hand, proposed to play on the counterattack; however, even so, he made the pressure marking. The best Colombian chances came from the feet of Linda Caicedo, an 18-year-old striker who has been taking responsibility in this World Cup.
And it was with this scenario that Colombia opened the scoring after 44 minutes of the first stage. Caicedo played for Leicy Santos, who was open on the right side. The player hit the goal and scored a great goal from outside the area, covering the goalkeeper Mary Earps.
However, England did not give up and pressed for a draw, which came seven minutes after the Colombian goal. Russo received a cross and anchored to the center of the penalty area. In the bat rebate, the ball seemed to be for the Colombian goalkeeper. However, Pérez fumbled and dropped the ball. So, Lauren Hemp took advantage and left everything the same.
In the second half, at 18 minutes, the English conquered the comeback. Stanway gave a deep pass to Russo, who managed to win the Colombian defender’s run and hit the Colombian goalkeeper’s exit to make it 2-1.
With 25 minutes of the second half, Colombia had a great chance to tie. Bedoya dropped a bomb from outside the area, but Earps made a great save to prevent the South American equalizer. England only held the tie in the final minutes and advanced to the semifinals.
