Mikel Iturria has renewed his contract with Euskaltel-Euskadi for the 2024 season, as reported this Thursday by the Basque team. The 31-year-old cyclist from Urnieta will thus complete five seasons with the orange team: “This renovation means a lot to me”Iturria said, after confirming the news.
Iturria, in this context, “will continue to be one of the team’s benchmarks in the most important competitions on the international calendar,” says Euskaltel-Euskadi. The Gipuzkoan rider is contesting, since Wednesday, the Tour of Portugal, in which his teammate Txomin Juaristi obtained, in the first stage, the second position, after the Portuguese Rafael Reis. Iturria has recently returned to competition, in the Clásica de Ordizia and in the Clásica de San Sebastián, already recovered from the fall he suffered in the last Vuelta a Asturias, in April.
Iturria, recalls his team, ran for three seasons at the Euskadi Foundation (in 2013 and 2014, in the continental formation, and in 2015 as an amateur), and has been with the Euskaltel-Euskadi since 2020. In his record, highlights the stage victory he obtained, in the 2019 Vuelta a España, in Urdaxwhen he belonged to the Euskadi Basque Country-Murias team.
“This renewal means a lot to me. I come from a long period of illnesses and the last injury. The fact that the team, with hardly any competition this year, has renewed me gives me a lot of confidence, and fills me with energy for the rest of the season, to try to do my best and achieve good results. I am very happy”, Iturria pointed out, while the sports manager of Euskaltel-Euskadi, Jorge Azanzahas thus valued the continuity of the Gipuzkoan “Mikel is another pillar of the team, like Bizkarra. Iturria has had delicate moments of health in recent years, but, as we saw in the San Sebastián Clásica, when he is well, he has a job and level like few others in the team, and he is a self-confident cyclist”.
