Milan beats Monza on penalties and is champion of the first edition of the Silvio Berlusconi Trophy

Milan and Monza played a friendly match valid for the Silvio Berlusconi Trophy this Tuesday. The Milan team won on penalties, 6-5, after a 1-1 draw in normal time. Pulisic opened the scoring, while Colpani equalized for Monza.

The game was a tribute to Silvio Berlusconi, who died in June and was the owner of both clubs, as well as the former Prime Minister of Italy. The Italian was in charge of Milan from 1986 to 2017 and, in 2018, he bought Monza, who at the time were still in the third tier of Italian football.

Pulisic, who arrived at the club in this window, made a good move inside Monza’s penalty area and got a penalty for Milan. The charge ended up being wasted, but the American opened the scoring for the team on the rebound with 30 minutes of the initial stage.

However, the Milan fans’ happiness did not last long. That’s because, two minutes after the Rossoneri’s goal, midfielder Colpani leveled the score again. Thus, the first half ended with a 1-1 draw on the scoreboard.

The second half was uneventful and the match was decided on penalties. In the kicks, Milan prevailed, by 6 to 5, and won the first edition of the Silvio Berlusconi Trophy.

With the victory, Milan in this pre-season won a duel, lost two and drew one, against Juventus, in which he was defeated on penalties, since it was a Soccer Champions Tour game, in the USA. The rubro-negro club debuts in A league on August 21, against Bologna, at 3:45 pm (Brasília time).

The Milan team, however, still has two more challenges ahead before the start of the season. This Wednesday, he faces Trento, at 1 pm, and next Sunday, at 6 am, he takes on Novara to put an end to his pre-season commitments.

Monza, on the other hand, won two friendlies and now lost two. The club’s first official match in the 2023/24 season will take place in the Coppa Italia, against AC Reggiana 1919, next Sunday, at 4:15 pm.
