The Nigerian players, who reached the Round of 16 of the Women’s World Cupasked the country’s football federation to pay the bonus and unpaid expenses for the tournament, through a statement from the players’ union FIFPro, published this Tuesday.
“The ‘Super Eagles’ believe that the time has come for the Nigerian Football Association to fulfill its commitments and pay the relevant sums,” the statement said.
Eliminated from the World Cup last Monday by Englandthe athletes from Nigeria waited for the end of the team’s participation in the competition to resume the battle they face with the federation’s leaders.
After having threatened to boycott the opening game against Canada, on July 21, the players agreed to put their claims aside to focus on the tournament.
Supported by FIFPro, the Nigerians then returned to charging bonuses, remuneration for calls and expenses, some of which date back to 2021.
“The team feels extremely frustrated having to go to the Nigerian Football Association for these payments before and during the tournament, and may have to continue to do so afterward. It is unfortunate that the players have to challenge their own association at such a time. so important part of their careers,” concluded the statement published by the union.
Nigeria has participated in every Women’s Cup since the first edition, which took place in 1991.
