The former Barcelona SC technician was fired from Santos Laguna last Monday after being eliminated in the league of the Apertura-2021 tournament.
Uruguayan Guillermo Almada was named on Thursday as Pachuca’s new coach for the Liga MX Clausura-2022 tournament that will begin in January.
The institution of the state of Hidalgo, in central Mexico, announced the hiring of the 52-year-old strategist on its social networks in a video in which Alfonso Flores, a player from the Pachuca blind team, welcomed him.
“I come to this great institution with dedication and commitment to seek the best because this great team deserves it and because Pachuca is its people,” Almada commented in the video.
Almada was fired from Santos Laguna last Monday due to “differences in the medium and long-term vision” with the Lagunera board.
With Santos Laguna, his first team in Mexico, which he reached in April 2019, Almada achieved the Clausura-2021 runner-up and returned the club to prominence.
In the current Apertura-2021, Almada led Santos to finish fifth in the standings, but was eliminated in the quarterfinals by the UANL Tigres.
Pachuca opted for the former Barcelona SC coach because of his profile to take advantage of young squads, like the one he had in Santos, with an average of 26 years.
In Pachuca, Almada will lead a payroll with an average of 26.6 years, among which Mexican prospects such as defender Félix Torres, forward Roberto de la Rosa, winger Kevin Álvarez and midfielder Erick Sánchez stand out.
Almada will replace his compatriot Paulo Pezzolano in the technical direction, who in four tournaments failed to give Pachuca his seventh league title.
Besides the youth, Almada, who sounded like Uruguay’s new coach, has a base of South American footballers led by Argentine goalkeeper Óscar Ustari, Colombian midfielder Yairo Moreno and Argentine forward Nicolás Ibáñez.
Almada will work in the following days to strengthen his squad, which finished in fifteenth place in the Apertura. (D)
