Daniil Medvedev propels Russia to Davis Cup semi-finals | Other Sports | sports

The world number two beat the Swede Mikael Ymer, adding to the victory of his compatriot Andrey Rublev against Elias Ymer.

Without the shocks that his compatriot Andrey Rublev previously suffered, the number one of the team Daniil Medvedev did not give an option to surprise and clearly beat Mikael Ymer (6-4 and 6-4) to seal Sweden’s elimination and Russia’s qualification for their second consecutive Davis Cup semi-final.

The Russian team captained by Shamil Tarpishev, who reached his hundredth tie as head of the team, they will face Germany on Saturday in search of the final.

The world’s number two won on the fast track, after an hour and fourteen minutes against the youngest of the Ymer, finalist this season in Winston Salem. The Muscovite’s game countered the attempts of his rival who kept the guy in the first set until Medvedev accelerated.

Scandinavian resistance waned in the second set. Although the tenacity of the Skovde player, 23, prevented a resounding result.

Medvedev’s triumph joins Andrey Rublev’s previous victory against Elias Ymer 6-2, 5-7 and 7-6 (3) that supposes the triumph of Russia and makes the doubles clash unnecessary that was planned between Andrey Rublev and Aslan Karatsev against the Swedes Andre Goransson and Robert Lindstedt.

Russia, the main favorite for success, will play on Saturday against Germany that beat Great Britain. Tarpishev’s team is aiming for their third Davis Cup title after those achieved in 2002 and 2006. In addition, they played another three unsuccessful finals: in 1994 defeated by Sweden; and in 1995 and 2007 with the United States. (D)
