“If a person does not even live in Russia, if a person does nothing for Russia, and even worse, when a person speaks out against the actions of his country in a difficult period, then why should we praise him?” the athlete asked. He supported the proposal to rename the stadium in Dagestan, named after Isinbayeva.
On July 20, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Peskov, stood up for Isinbayeva, saying that the sports community was reacting harshly to the statement of the jumper, not knowing what it was about.
