Gutzeit said that the Ministry of Sports did not receive letters asking for the release of Ivanchuk
Minister of Sports and Youth of Ukraine Vadim Gutzeit explained the refusal to let grandmaster Vasily Ivanchuk leave the country to participate in the World Cup of the International Chess Federation (FIDE). His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
Gutzeit said the ministry had not received a single letter requesting that the athlete be allowed to cross the border. He stressed that there is a procedure according to which the federation must send a letter to the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
On July 22, FIDE stated that, according to the current legislation, in order to leave the country for sports purposes, Ivanchuk needed permission from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, which he was denied. It is noted that the request from the organizers of the World Cup, the Azerbaijan Chess Federation, was also rejected.
The World Cup will be held in Baku from July 29 to August 25. Ivanchuk received a wild card from FIDE to participate in this tournament.
