Coach from the United States talks about favoritism in the Women’s World Cup: “The target on our backs is huge”

This Friday, the United States national team makes its debut in the Women’s World Cup de 2023. The Americans face Vietnam, at 10 pm (Brasília time), at Eden Park Stadium, in New Zealand. Coach Vlatko Andonovski declared that, as one of the favorites to lift the trophy, the United States is a target for many teams.

“Every time you win a big tournament and succeed, the target on your back grows. So going into this World Cup after winning the last two makes the target on our back huge. It doesn’t make things easier, but it makes it even more exciting”, said the coach in an interview with Fifa.

Andonovski also evaluated the group from the United States as challenging, but at the same time exciting. The Americans are in Group E, along with Vietnam, Portugal and Holland, with whom they must compete for the first place.

“It is a tournament in which we will see many disappointments and several interesting games in the group we are in. The teams have small differences in the way they behave on the field and this will bring even more emotion to the duels”, said the commander of the American squad.

Finally, the coach praised the striker Alex Morgan and said it’s an honor to coach players like her. The American has already won the World Cup twice and is one of the highlights of her selection, going in search of her third trophy.

“She has proven herself at all levels of this sport. She has proven herself as a great goalscorer, a true winner and competitor. Just to say that I have been surrounded by players like Alex is a pleasure and an honor,” concluded Andonovski.
