This Thursday, New Zealand overcame Norway by 1 to 0 in the opening duel of the Women’s World Cupvalid for Group A. Scorer of the goal that led to the New Zealanders’ first victory in a World Cup, striker Hannah Wilkinson declared that this was the best day of her life.
“It’s the best day of my life. Number one, without a doubt. It was a dream thing. In fact, it even surpassed dreams. The goal is the best moment of my life. It was incredible, she (Hand) couldn’t have crossed better. What a wonderful feeling”, said the center forward in a post-match interview.
Wilkinson also thanked the New Zealand fans, who attended the match. The selection’s debut at the World Cup was, to date, the largest attendance in the history of women’s football in New Zealand: 42,137 fans were at Eden Park to enjoy the victory.
“It was very emotional. I was so proud to be a New Zealander. Seeing my countrymen go wild, knowing what it means to them, is indescribable. I am so grateful to everyone who came. This victory was for all of us”, highlighted the athlete.
The attacker added: “The support tonight was phenomenal. The weather wasn’t the best, but seeing the fans here meant everything. It was the best atmosphere I’ve ever played in. We’ve already seen how important it is to play at home. But playing at home in New Zealand is something else.”
New Zealand started the Women’s World Cup on the right foot, winning one of the big favorites of the competition. Now, the next challenge for the New Zealanders takes place next Tuesday, against the Philippines, in the second round of Group A, and ends its participation in the group stage next Sunday, against Switzerland.
