Sports Minister Matytsin called Elena Isinbayeva’s attitude to military ranks unacceptable
Russian Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin condemned two-time Olympic pole vault champion Yelena Isinbayeva, who called her military ranks nominal. His words are quoted by TASS.
“There is an absolutely unambiguous assessment here – it is unacceptable to treat military rank, civil position and events that take place in your native country this way,” the minister said.
On July 17, the Olympic champion announced that she was resuming work at the International Olympic Committee from September. She also added that she had never served in the Russian Armed Forces and was not a State Duma deputy or a member of any party. Before that, El Digital Sur reported that Isinbayeva had moved to Spain. According to journalists, the athlete lives in Tenerife.
Isinbayeva, 41, is a major in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. The three-time world champion has been on the IOC Athletes’ Commission since 2016.
