Former Chelsea manager Lampard reveals lack of team spirit in his second spell at the club

Former coach of Chelsea, Frank Lampard revealed more behind-the-scenes details of his two spells at the London club. The former player pointed out that, during the period in which he led the Blues this year, he noticed a lack of unity and team spirit in the squad.

“I realized in training that the level was not enough to get a good result against Brentford and even less against Real Madrid. When I arrived, I found a team that lacked unity and team spirit”, highlighted Lampard in an interview with the podcast The Diary of a CEO.

The former coach said that some players in the squad, even during last season, were already thinking about their future clubs. “There were athletes who hadn’t played for seven months and were going to leave in the (European) summer. I don’t have a magic wand to motivate”.

Lampard also said that, despite the circumstances of his second spell at Chelsea, he did not regret the experience of having managed the London club again.

“It wasn’t the best experience of my career, but I learned from it. If people want to criticize me for six to seven weeks of work, that’s fine,” said the former Blues midfielder.

In charge of the Blues last season, Lampard made 11 games, had eight defeats, two draws and just one victory. The team finished English Championship in 12th place.

Finally, the Englishman also revealed that he tried, during his first spell for the English team, to bring defensive midfielder Declan Rice, who is on his way to the rival Arsenal.

“When I was at Chelsea before, I wanted to bring in Rice. For me, this boy would captain the club for the next ten years. But it didn’t happen,” Lampard lamented.
