Seven youths sentenced to life in prison in Greece for killing a fan

A Greek court on Wednesday handed down important sentences, seven of them to life imprisonment, against 12 people on trial for the violent death of a 19-year-old fan last year, according to the Athens Agency (semi-official).

Seven people were found guilty of voluntary manslaughter and sentenced to life in prison. The other five, found guilty of complicity in this crime that shocked Greece, were punished with prison sentences of more than 19 years.

The court did not recognize any extenuating circumstances for the 12 culprits, who had been detained since last year. The oldest of them is 26 years old.

The trial began on January 18 at the criminal court in Thessaloniki, Greece’s second-largest city and the location of the crime.

After 47 hearings, the prosecutor spoke of “an organized and planned attack until the last second with the intent of murder”, according to the Athens Agency.

On the night of February 1, 2022, the 12 defendants, PAOK Thessaloniki ‘hooligans’, took to the city streets with knives and metal bars. They attacked Alkis Kampanos and four of his friends, fans of rival club Aris FC.

Beaten for a minute, the 19-year-old died. Two of his friends were injured in the same attack.
