Mirra Andreeva said she refused to shake hands with the judge because of the wrong decision
Russian tennis player Mirra Andreeva, during a press conference, explained her refusal to shake hands with the referee after losing the 2023 Wimbledon match. Her words are quoted by ASAP Sports.
The athlete said that the judge made the wrong decision by punishing her for the incident with the racket. Because of this, 16-year-old Andreeva decided not to shake her hand. “I had no intention of throwing the racket. I slipped. I thought I would fall forward. The decision was hers, she accepted it, ”she emphasized.
Earlier, on July 10, Andreeva lost to American Madison Keys in the 1/8 final match of the tournament. The meeting ended with the score 6:3, 6:7 (4:7), 2:6.
In the final game of the third set, Andreeva received a penalty point for throwing a racket. The Russian woman tried to explain to the referee that she fell on the court and therefore dropped her racket, that is, she did not do it on purpose. However, her arguments were not accepted, and punishment followed, since during the tie-break in the second set she was given a warning.
