Real Madrid pay late game with Athletic Bilbao and could extend Spanish league advantage

In the wake of Vinicius Júnior, Real Madrid have a chance to expand their lead in the Spanish Championship. This Wednesday, Real will host Athletic Bilbao, at 5 pm (GMT), at the Santiago Bernabéu, in a duel valid for the 9th round. The game, originally scheduled for October, was postponed due to the FIFA Date at the time – the South American athletes would not be able to return in time for the La Liga match.

Leader of Espanyol, with 33 points, Real have four points ahead of Atletico Madrid, who will have a game in hand in relation to their rivals. Atlético’s duel with Granada, for the 9th round, which was also postponed, has not yet been paid.

Against Bilbao, Real Madrid bet on a partnership that has been working: Vinicius Júnior and Benzema. The Frenchman scored the equalizing goal, while the Brazilian guaranteed the victory over Sevilla, on Sunday.

Vinicius Júnior has 11 goals and five assists in 19 games for Real Madrid this season. Benzema’s numbers are even better: 16 goals and eight assists in 18 games so far.

Athletic Bilbao, in turn, is not coming at a good time. The team suffers a sequence of five games without winning in the Spanish Championship, with four draws and one defeat. Athletic is in ninth place, with 20 points.
