SNI will request a selective differential tax for craft beer

The National Society of Industries (SNI) announced that it will soon request the Executive to arrange a differential selective tax for craft beer. The readjustment will allow the sector to develop as a small industry, said Antonio Castillo, representative of the union.

It should be noted that, in January of this year, the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) increased the Selective Consumption Tax (ISC) for all beverages with more than 20 degrees of alcohol. Thus, the ISC of beer went from S / 2.25 to S / 2.31 per liter.

“The Selective Consumption Tax has been one of the highest we have had in Latin America and even in the world,” Castillo said. In addition, he added that, although the product is inflexible on the rise in prices, at a certain point it reaches a limit where it becomes impossible to “increase or transfer the product.”

In the same vein, the beer sector between 2016 and 2019, contributed S / 15,500 million in payment of taxes, while during 2019 it represented 2.1% of the national GDP with around S / 4,300 million.

The beer sector has not recovered yet

On the other hand, the SNI indicated that the beer sector has been one of the most affected by the restrictive measures implemented to control the advance of COVID-19 in Peru. To date it experiences a 12.5% decline compared to their pre-pandemic levels.

“From 1 million 50,000 liters that was manufactured in 2019, with the pandemic it dropped to 600,000 liters, and now we are at 750,000 liters,” said Antonio Castillo during the event “Land of brewers: the impact of the beer sector in Peru”, organized by the SNI Beer Manufacturers Committee.
