The Russian Embassy demanded from Poland information about the detained hockey player Maxim Sergeev

The Russian Embassy in Poland appealed to the local prosecutor’s office with a demand to provide information about the detained Russian hockey player Maxim Sergeyev. This was reported to RIA Novosti by Andrey Ordash, Charge d’Affaires of Russia in Poland.

“In addition to the note to the Polish Foreign Ministry, the Embassy sent an appeal to the National Prosecutor’s Office of Poland with a demand to confirm the fact of the arrest of a Russian citizen, inform about the nature of the charges against him and allow our consular staff to meet with him,” he said.

Ordash added that law enforcement officers have not yet commented on the situation. He reproached Poland for non-compliance with international legal obligations in dealings with the Russian side.

On June 30, Sergeev, who played for the Polish club Zaglembe, was detained on charges of espionage and participation in a spy network allegedly acting in the interests of Moscow. The athlete became the 14th detainee during this investigation. Sergeev faces up to ten years in prison. The court decided on his arrest for three months.
