O palm trees faced Huachipato this Monday (3), in his debut for the under-20 Libertadores, and was very close to winning by comeback. However, a mistake by goalkeeper Kaique ruined everything: in the end, at the Francisco Sánchez Rumoroso Stadium, in Coquimbo, Chile, the team coached by Lucas Andrade was only 2-2.
Who opened the scoring was Huachipato. After a cross by Claudio Torres, the ball was left in the small area for shirt 3, Maximiliano Gutiérrez — who hit it hard, flat.
10 minutes later, Thalys left everything the same. Edney, in the middle, made the long cross into the area – and the number 9 appeared to complete the header and cover the rival goalkeeper.
At 30 of the first half, Allan was brought down inside the area and the referee signaled the penalty. When taking the penalty, the number 20 shirt was awarded to the net.
When everything seemed to be heading towards a victory for Alviverde, Gutiérrez returned to score. Close to the end of the game, from midfield, the defender went to survey the area. Kaique anticipated, tried to secure the defense and completely lost time on the ball – this one that, slowly, went to the nets: 2 to 2.
This is the first time that Palmeiras participates in the under-20 Libertadores. The place in the competition was secured after winning the two tournaments in the category organized by the CBF in 2022: the Brazilian championship it’s at Brazil’s Cup. In addition, the Palestinian team is the current two-time champion of São Paulo Junior Football Cup.
Verdão is in group C, alongside Huachipato, Defensor Sporting and Boca Juniors. Also participating in the competition are Peñarol, Caracas, Allianza Lima, O’Higgins, Independiente del Valle, Cerro Porteño, Envigado and Always Ready. The teams face each other within their groups, and the leaders of each, in addition to the second best overall, advance to the semifinals.
The final will be played in a single game, on the 16th of July. The next commitment of Lucas Andrade’s team for the competition will be at 7 pm this Thursday, at Estádio La Portada, against Defensor Sporting.
