Russian Ilya Sorokin has signed a new contract with the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League (NHL), making him one of the highest paid goaltenders in the tournament. This was reported on the league website.
The contract will come into effect at the end of the previous one – from the 2024/25 season. Under the deal, Sorokin would earn $8.25 million per season for a total of $66 million.
According to the Sportac.com portal, only three NHL goalkeepers earn more than Sorokin: Andrey Vasilevsky of the Tampa Bay Lightning (9.5 million), Sergey Bobrovsky of the Florida Panthers (10 million) and Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens (10.5 million).
The Russian goalkeeper has been defending the colors of the Islanders since the 2020/21 season. Last season, Sorokin went on the ice in 62 NHL regular season games, in which he missed 140 goals. The percentage of saved shots by the goalkeeper is 92.4, the reliability coefficient is 2.34. In the playoffs, his statistics was 16 missed goals in 6 matches.
On June 27, Sorokin finished second in voting for the NHL Goaltender of the Year Award. In the fight for the Vezina Trophy, the Russian lost only to the Swedish Boston Bruins goalkeeper Linus Ullmark.
