‘Tata’ Martino arrives at the American club to replace Phil Neville, sacked in June, and lead a team with the Argentine star for the third time. Both the coach and the athlete worked together in two other opportunities: in the Barcelona and in the Argentine national team.
For the Spanish club, the 60-year-old Argentine coach led Messi during the 2013/14 season. During the campaign, Barça won the Spanish Super Cup. In 59 matches in the period, there were 40 wins, 11 draws and eight defeats. The then number 10, in turn, played 46 games, scoring 41 goals and distributing 14 assists.
Shortly after leaving Barcelona, Tata Martino led the Argentine national team, taking over in August 2014, after the vice-championship of the world Cup, until he left office in July 2016. However, the passage did not have titles. In two finals of America CupArgentina was runner-up on both occasions, losing to Chile on penalties.
Now at Inter Miami, both Tata Martino and Lionel Messi have the mission to ‘save’ the club. That’s because the team is the bottom of the Eastern Conference of Major League Soccer, with 13 defeats in 18 games. However, there are still chances of qualifying for the playoffs.
Acting in MLS, Martino commanded Atlanta United, from 2017 and 2018, winning the national tournament at the end of his passage. Now, the Argentine coach returns to the US league to command Inter Miami.
